![]() ![]() Third, stemming off that, there were a lot of real ethical problems. I’m guessing as a result of a bad divorce? His mental state seemed fragile and naive, like that of a child, even more alarming being that he had a child of his own! ![]() He had obviously suffered some serious mental breakdown or trauma and the relationship with the octopus was a coping mechanism for him. Second, it felt like the filmmaker was omitting some serious things. The movie was entirely about him, and there was way too much anthropomorphizing of the octopus and other sea creatures. Overall I enjoyed it, even got a little misty-eyed at times, but couldn’t keep from snickering most of the time.įirst, the filmmaker/narrator was so ridiculously pretentious. I love animals and have had dogs for a long time, so the idea that a human can develop a strong bond with an animal wasn’t revelatory to me. It left me with a huge smile on the face as it ended. Not just as pets, but as gentle animals who I don't anthropomorphize anymore. I'll probably treat my dogs more differently now lol. I truly learnt that the wildness in animals should be respected. Ofcourse we all have our opinions but it's been so long since I saw such an intriguing and satisfying documentary. The beauty also is derived from the perfect balance of raw emotion and professional cinematography. He showed ample restraint and respect towards the sea creatures and the forest itself. He was doing his job, his personal life shouldn't be a point of criticism. ![]() He may not be in a 'perfect mental state' but that shouldn't be our problem nor concern. This is a man looking to reinforce his life purpose, so ofcourse the documentary will revolve around him and his narrative. Don't know where you got the idea of him being 'pretentious'. Infact, it's our own human bias to think there's some sick sexual undertone. Furthermore, there was alot to gain in terms of facts about wildlife under water presented in the most realistic sense- without the over dramatisation that we humans tend to do. The relation was so beautiful it made me teary eyed. They seemed so inviting and the octopus definitely showed her playful side. Ofcourse biologists tell you to stay away from nature, but in no way did the octopus or other creatures seem harmed by his presence. How there is excitement in the subtleties of nature and it's shortness. Not just the camera work but also the close bond he has attained with a highly antisocial animal. But honestly the beauty in this documentary lies in its depths. I totally understand your pov and even those in the comments who agree with you. ![]()
